Thermostat… or thermometer?

What is the difference between a thermostat and a thermometer? Right. A thermostat sets the temperature, and a thermometer tells the temperature. Last night was my first night of class with Faith Works Extension College and James Thorpe told us a little about what leadership is…

“Leadership is not about being on the stage or having a microphone. Leadership is influence. Be the thermostat, not the thermometer.”

So often I see leadership as being on stage and not simply… influence. The Lord has been calling me to really step in to my role as a leader, and I am having to take huge steps to overcome sin in my own life so that I can take that calling and my passions and really do something about and with them.

Have you ever noticed when someone with a terrible attitude walks in the room they sort of suck it dry of any… life, that is going on in it? I know I have, and I have also unfortunately been that person. That person is acting as the thermometer - by walking into the room with that, they are telling everyone what the temperature is.

Wonder what a thermostat looks like? Take this for example: a person walks up to you and starts trashing another person. You realize as they are talking that you actually like that person… and you say something about it! That alone changes the temperature in the room. When we act as a thermostat in our leadership, we create the temperature in the room.

I am learning to be the thermostat and not the thermometer.

…what will you be?
